Grandpa Sal
Dear children: Today I was thinking about Grandpa Sal. December 2007 marks seven years since he has passed away. I just wanted to tell you how much you all meant to him. You were his only grandchildren, and his pride and joy. He was a very quiet man and did'nt express his feeling much, but if you looked into his eyes you would know how much he loved you all. Grandpa Sal had a quiet, gentle and patient spirit about him. He was very intelligent. He went to engineering school after high school but never went further because he was drafted into the Air Force. He served in World War II and flew in many maneuvers as a flight engineer. During one of these attacks, he had to risk his life to climb out towards the wing of the plane and release a bomb that would not release. For that brave act he recieved a Purple Heart which is one of the highest awards for bravery. When grandpa came home from the war he met Grandma Florence and they got married. Jobs were hard to find so he took whatever was available. Unable to buy a house, they lived with his parents for many years. They lived together in Brooklyn for many years before grandpa and grandma decided to move to Long Island to buy their first house. I was a teenager by then. They lived there until Grandma Florence died in 1984. He only owned one house after that and it was his house in Florida. I'm only saying all that to say, he wasn't rich or owned alot of material possessions like we expect to have today. He never had the job of his dreams, or went on many vacations. You might say that the life he lived was dull and unfullfilling, but he enjoyed his home, his family and loved his grandchildren more then himself. He never had a charge card or owed anyone. When he put his head on his pillow to sleep, he had peace. He would dance around with Danielle and Jessica to the song "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know dear how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away". John, he loved to fish with you when you had the patience. He would be so proud to know you have all of his medals and pictures of his Air Force days. This is his legacy. We SALUTE you.....Love mom

Hi Mom,
I love this letter. I didn't know that story about the bomb. I wasn't sure how he got the purple heart. Thanks for sharing it.
Love you,
Jessie
